Rome, 27 September 2024 – The Grand Chancellor of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Riccardo Paternò di Montecupo, visited the United Nations in New York from 21 to 27 September, for the Summit for the Future and the opening of the General Debate of the 79th General Assembly.

After accompanying the Grand Master of the Order to a meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations on 21 September and to a speech at the Summit on the Future of Europe the following day, the Grand Chancellor spoke in an open debate of the Security Council on 26 September on the topic of “Leadership for Peace”.

In addition, the Grand Chancellor held a series of bilateral talks with members of the government and other representatives of various UN member states.

In his speech to the Security Council, the Grand Chancellor highlighted youth and the education system as key to implementing the Pact for the Future. He emphasized that special attention must be paid to mediation and negotiation, as well as to promoting a culture of integration, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.

"The Order of Malta," the Grand Chancellor said, "supports this culture and these values through its daily actions and a tradition that began ten centuries ago, for the benefit of all those in need, regardless of nationality, religion, or gender. Thanks to our neutrality and impartiality, we put these values into practice in all areas and under the most difficult circumstances, such as in Ukraine, the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, South Sudan, and Haiti."
