When Georg Bätzing spoke about the federal election on Monday afternoon before the start of the spring plenary assembly of the German Bishops' Conference (DBK), he took a clear stance. "We want a free, cosmopolitan, and solidarity-based country in which human dignity and human rights are clearly protected," said the Limburg Bishop in his capacity as chairman of the DBK.

Just four weeks before the federal election, the representative of the Bishops' Conference at the seat of the federal government apparently thought the same thing when, together with his Protestant colleague, he attacked the CDU/CSU parties with unprecedented severity. The influx restriction law, which the CDU/CSU intends to put to a vote in the Bundestag on January 31, is, in key respects, contrary to European law and the constitution, all members of the Bundestag were able to read in an email on the evening of January 28. And with the two migration policy resolutions, which the Bundestag was to debate the following day at the instigation of the CDU/CSU, Merz had broken his promise not to hold any votes in which the AfD's votes could be decisive after the collapse of the traffic light coalition. In general, the CDU/CSU's actions were solely designed to "defame all migrants living in Germany, stir up prejudices, and ... fail to contribute to solving the real issues."

Show on clock

In light of these accusations by church officials against the CDU and CSU, their political opponents were overjoyed. Indeed, the SPD, in particular, repeatedly cited the church officials' attacks during the waning election campaign as proof of the Union's inhumanity. Union representatives, in turn, had to watch in a mixture of impotent rage and speechlessness as even laypeople like the President of the Central Committee of German Catholics, Irme Stetter-Karp, echoed the bishops' tone in interviews.
